Tauranga tribal Leader, Morehu Ngatoko Rahipere has been awarded with an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Waikato for his contribution to the University, the Waikato region, and across the country.
Te Awananuiarangi Black says, “We're really pleased for senior elder, leader and chief, and to see the big contingent from Tauranga who've come to celebrate. It fills my heart with great joy.”
Rahipere has led many initiatives linked to the University of Waikato, including the establishment of the Maharaia Winiata Research Institute.
Tom Roa says, “The reserach and education Te Kotahitanga programme, with the aim of providing cultural guidance and safety of the child at school. Morehu was the programmes national patron.”
Rahipere remains dedicated to working alongside his people and the King Movement.
"More importantly for us, he carries the values of his Marae of Huria, regardless of the occasion big or small, he's there as host to all its visitors,” said Te Awananuiarangi Black.
