Te Arawa representatives to commemorate Tarawera eruption in England

Members representing the Rotomahana Parekarangi Trust will commemorate the Tarawera eruption in Clandon Park in England where they’ll have a cultural exchange with the Earl of Onslows’ family.

The Trust will also donate $10,000 to the Onslow family after a massive fire destroyed the Surrey Infantry Museum just 60 metres from where the Hinemihi wharenui is being housed.

Mauriora King said, seven trust members leave for England on Sunday and will commemorate the Tarawera eruption when they visit the Hinemihi wharenui on June 10.

During the Tarawera Eruption in 1886 Hinemihi wharenui was a safe haven for those near the eruption, which also destroyed the pink and white terraces.

The wharenui was taken to Britain by the fourth Earl of Onslow, William Onslow, who was the Governor of New Zealand between 1889 and 1892.
