Te Haaro o te Kaahu Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua 2016 – Te Reo Whakakoko o Mauao

Te Reo Whakakoko o Mauao was established in 2013.

Kaihaka affiliate to many different iwi including Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāiterangi and Ngāti Pūkenga.

Their mission statement is "Kia whakatō ngā uara me ngā tōmairangi o tō mātau wharekura ki roto i ngā tauira".

The group’s kaitātaki wahine is Hinerau Nicholas and their kaitātaki tāne is Te Harawira Ohia.

Designs on their kākahu depict their maunga, Mauao. The red represents the Pohutukawa, the ancient tree that safeguards Mauao. The green depicts pounamu.

This clip shows the group’s poi, entitled ‘Te Motuōpuhi’. This item was composed by Yolande Tipuna, Meremaihi Aloua and Sonny Wharekura. It talks of women of high rank who resided on an island near the Tauranga estuary.
