Ngā Puna o Waiōrea from the Tāmaki Makaurau region was established in 1980 and is made up of kaihaka from all over Aotearoa.

The schools philosophy is “Whaia te manu mātauranga” which means pursue the bird of learning and knowledge.

Their green and gold kākahu depict the whakapapa of the Waiōrea area and also represents the whakapapa of the students, their journey through school and their transition into the world.

Ngā Puna o Waiōrea was led on stage my kaitātaki tāne Te Moana Kershaw and kaitātaki wahine Te Waiora Morehu.

In preparation for the national competition, the group was taught under the guidance of tutors Tianara Wihongi, Marissa Peters, Tūhoe Tamaiparea, Nathaniel Howe and Pere Wihongi.

This clip shows the Ngā Puna o Waiōrea waiata-ā-ringa entitled “He Matarehu”. The song was composed by Pere Wihongi and is a lament for those who have passed on, in particular, those who have deceased who have been part of the Waiōrea whānau, allowing performers to express their grief and sorrow.
