Te Kāea Anzac Day News Bytes - 12:00pm

In the second Te Kāea Anzac Day News Byte special we cross to our reporters based at events across the country commemorating ANZAC soldiers.

Over 300 people descended upon Ōhinemutu, Rotorua to remember our fallen soldiers, but for the first time a woman delivered the main speech during the dawn service.

Flt Lt Angela Swann-Cronin who is of Ngāti Porou and Rongowhakaata grew up in Rotorua and was a member in the Royal New Zealand Airforce.

This year marks 75 years of our Royal New Zealand Navy so Navy vessels are visiting ports around the country, with one of only two of the Navy’s warships HMNZS Te Kaha in Hawke's Bay this Anzac.

It's the biggest contingent of Navy sailors ever in Hawkes Bay, with some 250 of them here to commemorate the Navy's 75th year.

Today they're marking New Zealand's greatest Navy tragedy, the sinking of HMS Neptune in 1941, where more than 700 sailors died.

150 of them were New Zealanders, all killed when the ship got caught in a minefield in Lybian waters.

Te Mahurehure is the hapū, Te Mahurehure is the marae, the only Auckland marae which holds a memorial service for all soldiers.

Along with the contingent from the North local and urban dwellers gathered there to support the event.

Prayers were recited in front of the flagstaff and monument while tributes flowed for fallen comrades, service men and women.
