Te Kehukehu Butler makes waves in the Pro-Surfing world

Ngāi Te Rangi surfer Te Kehukehu Butler has taken out the World Surfing League Junior Pro competition in Cronulla at the weekend.

A first for the teenager, Butler spoke to our reporter Ripeka Timutimu before he jetted off to Hawaii for the next leg of the competition.

It's a victory dance Māori style for Kehu Butler who is still reeling after beating out 80 of Australasia and Asia's top surfers in Cronulla.

16-year old Butler has been competing at the World Surfing League Pro junior series in Australia.

The series has 10 legs in different locations. Butler won his first competition against Sandy Whittaker in the final.

For three years, Te Kāea has been following Butler's career since he started making waves on the surfing scene.

Despite those challenges, Butler is travelling to Hawaii today to compete in the Rip Curl Grom Search.

Last year, he placed third in the competition.

With talent and hard work, there's no doubt the little ripper from Arataki will continue to make waves in the surfing world in the future.
