Te Kura Wiwini, Te Kura Wawana - Te Kapa Rau Aroha

Te Kapa Rau Aroha originates from Te Tai Tokerau combining the talent of Whangarei Girls and Boys High Schools, and this year their team has been tasked with the huge responsibility of setting the standard and kicking off performances on Day One of Te Kura Wīwini, Te Kura Wāwana - the Secondary Schools Kapa Haka National Competition.

The group was established by Natasha Sadler and Tatai Henare in 2000 to foster leadership within their tamariki, strengthen their knowledge of te reo me ōna tikanga and fulfil school whānau wishes.

Today marks their third appearance at national level.

This kapa which has whakapapa links to Muriwhenua, Hokianga, Pewhairangi and Whangarei Terenga Paraoa has built a strong reputation in Te Tai Tokerau haka circles and is tutored by David Tapene (Head Tutor), Otene Hopa, Marcia Hopa and Joby Hopa.

Their kaitātaki wahine this year is Kerira Tapene, (Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Hine, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Porou).  Their kaitātaki tāne is Ricki Anderson,  (Ngāpuhi, Ngati Hine).

Here is their waiata ā-ringa, which is a tribute to Ngarimu Te Moana Nui a Kiwa VC and Willie Apiata VC, which outlines how their amazing achievements and bravery have strengthened the ties between Te Tai Tokerau and Te Tai Rāwhiti.
