Te Arawa are mourning the loss of another respected elder.
Te Uru O Te Whetu Frederick Whata, QSM, of Ngāti Pikiao, passed away overnight at the age of 81. He will be remembered for breaking down cultural barriers between Māori and the regional councils on environmental issues over the years.
He also contributed to the introduction of kaupapa Māori practices in the Ministry of Justice and Courts for more than 25 years and was the chairman for Te Takinga Marae in Mourea for over 20 years, which is also where Mr Whata is laying in state.
His burial will be held on Thursday.
