Te Ururoa Flavell insists road in Awahou is made safer

The Minister for Māori Development Te Ururoa Flavell is supporting calls from residents who live on and around Leonard Rd in Awahou, Rotorua, calling for something to be done to make that particular road safer after years of too many accidents.

Te Ururoa Flavell says, "The majority of the time it's a good road, but after a fatal accident affected my Ngāti Rangiwēwehi side just days ago, some have expressed their concerns."

Flowers mark the unsafe stretch of road in remembrance of a couple who died in a fatal crash just this week.  Many paid their respects to them today at Tarimano Marae in Awahou.

Some residents are very concerned about the speed in the area and want the speed limit reduced from 100 to 70km/h.

The latest fatality now brings the annual Rotorua road toll to four.

While police are still conducting an investigation into the latest accident, they urge people to slow down.
