Teacher charged with sexual violation

Rueben James Tapara, was a teacher and assistant principal at  Te Wharekura o Te Kaokaoroa o Pātetere in Pūtāruru.

Today in the Hamilton District Court, he faced seven charges, three of sexual violation, three of conducting an indecent act on a boy aged between 12-16 and one charge of supplying cannabis to a person under the age of 18.

It is understood Tapara taught in Te Kuiti before going to Te Kaokaoroa o Pātetere in 2010, and was fired two days after the school community learned the charges had been laid last month.

The Principal of Te Wharekura o Te Kaokaoroa o Pātetere, Keith Silveira is still dealing with the distressing news. He says the main focus at this present time is to provide the necessary support for their students.

In court, police said that since the initial charges were laid against Mr Tapara another three complainants have come forward.

No plea has been entered by the accused and he has been remanded further in custody until December 3.
