Tertiary announcement raises concern

The Minister of Tertiary Education is proposing that we decrease the representation on universities and wānanga councils, currently the number sits between 12 and 20.

The purpose changes will see that number cut to no more than 12 members.  Four will be chosen by the Tertiary Education.

Educationalist from Waiariki Ken Keneti wants assurances that Maori students will have a voice on university, wânanga councils.

The overhaul for tertiary education will at least take into consideration the independence of an institution, allowing them to decide how their councils will be made up, but the numbers of members will now be between 8 and 12.
