Thompson to represent Māori at World Indigenous Games

Davina Thompson of Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāti Hokopu, Ngāti Hē and Ngāti Makino descent is well-known for her sporting abilities and contribution to her home town of Kawerau.

Her talent whilst involved in rugby, cross-fit, power-lifting and kabaddi, to name a few, is evident, and she continues to inspire people of all ages to pursue a healthy lifestyle.

Just recently, she was given the opportunity to be a part of the Aotearoa contingent to head off to the very first World Indigenous Games to be held in Brazil in October.

The 9-day competition will consist of more than 2000 indigenous sports from 30 different countries.

Davina will be a part of the Māori contingent named Ki-o-rahi Akotanga Iho, who will be guests of honour at the event and will take part in the first 3 days of showcasing traditional dance.

She believes this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and says "To me it's everything I am, everything that I believe in."

Harko Brown, who is in charge of the group states that "One of our big pushes will be to get our kids involved with these international opportunities. A great promo for the games of our tupuna and an opportunity to make further networks on the kaupapa."

Wānanga will be held prior to their departure where rangatahi and leading facilitators will come together to plan and prepare for the international event.
