Top guns vie for secondary schools national Sevens titles

New Zealand's top young sevens stars descended on Auckland in the weekend for the 28th National Condor Sevens.

Rotorua Boys High School and Scots College from Wellington went head-to-head for the title this year, and in the final of the girls section, it was Hamilton Girls High against Southland Girls High.

It was nearly a scoreless first half in the girls' final until NZ U19 representative Awatea Whitiora Te Uira broke the defence and sprinted the field to put Hamilton Girls High ahead 7-0.

During half-time, Hamilton girls coach told her team where to focus on to keep the lead.

After a penalty close to the try-line, the Southland girls made their opposition pay and grabbed their first try.

Hamilton Girls are the defending champions but fatigue was setting in and the Southern girls struck again under the posts to take the lead 12-7.

With under a minute left in the final, cue the star of the Hamilton side Awatea Whitiora Te Uira.

With the successful conversion, Hamilton Girls defend their title and are crowned national secondary schools Sevens champs again.

In the boys final between Rotorua Boys High School and Scots College, Rotorua doesn't waste any time, slipping through the gap and racing away for the first points of the game.

A minute later they strike again not once but twice to take a convincing 21-0 lead.

However it didn't go all Rotorua's way, just before the half time break Scots College grabbed their first try.

Captain Isaac Te Aute from Rotorua Boys opened up the second half with his own individual brilliance and extended their lead to 28-7.

Scots did get another two tries but it wasn't enough.  The Vegas boys were too strong, taking the win 33-19 and winning the title for the first time.
