The taboo subject of burial has got some traditionalists concerned about how the law around burial may be shaped. Cremation is becoming popular amongst many New Zealanders, but in Waikato, some are opting to scatter their ashes on the Waikato River.
In the Law Commission's Review, they propose new legal requirements for all crematoria and transferring responsibility for authorising crematoria from central to local Government under the RMA. There's also a proposed change to provide for individuals to be buried on private land.
