Treaty Minister meets with Ngāpuhi before Parliament recess

By Dean Nathan

A Ngāpuhi settlement is too important for the Minister of Treaty Negotiations to miss before Parliment rises

According to Chris Finlayson, "Well it's to big and too important to miss this meeting its extremely important to engage with Ngāpuhi because there a big settlement that has to be had up here for the sake of the north."

The Minister indicated that he does not support a call by Ngāti Hine for its own settlement.

According to Sonny Tau, “There is to be one settlement for Ngāpuhi.  The Minister will not consider a settlement with any other but has directed us to work with the respective hapū and claimants who are still yet to come on board.”

The meeting at hand was an opportunity for hapū representatives appointed to Tūhoronuku to hear the strategies to achieving a final settlement.

Meanwhile, a decision from the Waitangi Tribunal is pending as to whether it will call an urgent inquiry into major concerns that have been raised over the whole process.

After the upcoming election we will know whether he remains the Minister in charge of Treaty Negotiations.
