Today members of the Māori Party voted for who they want to run for the Tāmaki Makaurau electorate at this year's general elections and Tunuiarangi McLean has been selected as their candidate.

However the Labour Party is still yet to decide their candidate, with two possible nominations to choose from.

Māori Party Members gathered today to choose their candidate who will fill the void that will be left by Pita Sharples.

Dr Pita Sharples says, “it was great to hear all the candidates speak, to hear their vision, I am aware of all 3 so I am happy that we've got to this point.”

Bronwyn Yates of Te Arawa, Tunuiarangi McClean of Tuhoe and Te Hira Paenga of Ngati Porou were those who put their names forward for the Māori Party Candidacy for Tāmaki Makaurau.

The man selected to represent the party in the Tāmaki Makaurau electorate, Tunuiarangi McLean, says, “I have the skills to enhance the great work achieved by our leader Pita.’

Since 2005, the Tamaki Electorate has been retained by the Pita Sharples, he believes that their candidate will be able to hold the seat.

The Labour Party is yet to announce its Tāmaki Candidate, however the head of the Māori Department at Rutherford College William Flavell has put his name forward as a possible candidate.

However one long time serving Labour Party Member, Shane Te Pou says, that it's not right that their selection process should be dragged out while possible Shane Taurima, former head of the Maori and Pacific Island Unit at TVNZ continues to be investigated

The Māori Party hopes to announce all of it's candidates for the Māori Electorates in the up and coming election within the next 2 weeks.
