Tūrangawaewae Marae prepared to host the masses celebrating Koroneihana 2015

Koroneihana 2015 commemorations get underway today at Tūrangawaewae Marae in Ngāruawāhia celebrating the 9th Coronation of King Tuheitia.

Today will pay tribute and honour those who have passed away with the kawe mate of Waikato-Tainui, tomorrow those from around the country who have passed away will also be remembered.  A number of kapa haka will also participate in celebrations today with special performances.

The Coronation day will see masses converge on the small Waikato township to celebrate King Tuheitia, the Kīngitanga movement and all it represents.

Politicians are also expected to descend onto Tūrangawaewae Marae during the week.

Friday night will see a special musical performance by students of Te Wharekura o Rākaumangamanga and a number of sporting activities will take place over the weekend and throughout the week.

Saturday will also see kapa haka from Waikato-Tainui and around the country participate and perform for the celebrations which will include Te Whānau a Apanui, Waihirere and Whāngārā Mai Tawhiti.

This event has been running for 74 years now at Tūrangawaewae Marae and the locals are experts at preparation and organisation and those who keep everything running in the background were welcomed with an official pōhiri yesterday.
