Tūrangawaewae Waka Ama celebrates 10-year Anniversary

The Club was first established in 2005 by Tūrangawaewae whānau and Hoturoa Kerr of Te Toki Waka Ama.  The club now has over 120 members with countless successes at a regional, national and international level.

It’s taken a decade of commitment to promote, encourage, nurture and maintain waka ama in the Tūrangawaewae region.

“Just look at it, it's beautiful, it brings us home,” says Angie Poutapu one of the founding members of the club.

Many were acknowledged for their contribution to the club, and amongst the list a special mention was given to gold medalist and support volunteer of the club, the late Tuhi Simon.

Tonga White was also honoured for her commitment and dedication to the sport.

“It was about getting our club up and going that was the best part for me, I had already been paddling for another club so just introducing it to the locals was a highlight for me” say Ms White

The club has won the Junior Club of the Year twice and been fortunate to compete internationally.

“Tahiti is our All Blacks of Waka Ama and as clubs we hope to share our knowledge to advance our level,” says Tūrangawaewae waka ama advocate Barney Wharakura.

The knowledge the club has gained has kept a strong hold among the club to compete with the best clubs across the country.
