Tūwharetoa motorsport athlete Faine Kahia signs with Giltrap Group

19-year-old Ngāti Tūwharetoa motorsport athlete Faine Kahia has signed a sponsorship deal with the Giltrap Group. He is just one of many drivers from Aotearoa who have received support from the group.

Its founder, Sir Collin Giltrap, has been involved in motorsport since the mid-60s. His passion is supporting young New Zealand motoring talent, in the hope that they would make it in the "big time" overseas.

Kahia says, “To join the Giltrap family of drivers is a hugely important milestone and one that means the world to me because of the high calibre of their drivers.

It will be an excellent opportunity for me to continue the success of the Giltrap brand abroad."

Kahia will head off to Malaysia this week to test the brand new 2016 Renault Powered F4 car.

"I'll be working hard towards my goal of securing a spot in the Renault Sport Development Academy and it all starts here, whether testing or racing, every single opportunity on the track counts and I'll be making the most of it," Kahia says.

Kahia has also been announed as a finalist for the inaugural Matariki Awards in the Young Achievers category. The Awards celebrate extraordinary Māori talent across a broad range of fields and industries.

Earlier in the year, Native Affairs reporter Wepiha Te Kanawa covered a story on Faine Kahia, referring to him as the "World's Fastest Māori."
