‘Vote Kapa Vote’ successfully encouraging more Māori to vote

We have seen it all before with Hollywood celebrities partaking in the ice challenge to raise money for charities.

Now some of NZ’s top haka groups are using that same idea to get more Māori out to vote in this year’s General Election.  Instigated by East Coast haka group, Te Whānau a Apanui just in August, the movement has taken social media by storm.

Tūtara Kauika Ki Rangataua, Te Waka Huia, Te Mātarae-I-Ōrehu, Whāngārā Mai Tawhiti and Te Iti Kahurangi are a few of the groups that have showed their support to vote for the 2014 elections by posting a video of their group to Facebook page ‘Vote Kapa Vote’.

Voting polls are currently open and statistics from the Electoral Commission show 234,283 people en-rolled in the Māori roll have voted already.

There’s only a limited time remaining for the newly nominated groups to post their video.

Apparently if they fail to deliver they will have to cop the bill at Te Matatini in Christchurch next year.
