Voting papers for second flag referendum out today

More than three million voting packs will be sent out over the next week, ahead of the second referendum on the New Zealand flag.

Chief Electoral Officer Robert Peden says, “Voting packs will be arriving in people’s mailboxes over the next few days.

They’ll arrive between today and Friday 11 March. Your voting pack will include your voting paper, a return freepost envelope and full information on how to complete your paper. It will also include information about the two flag options voters will be choosing between.”

The referendum runs from Thursday 2 March until Thursday 24 March.

Voters will be asked to choose between the current flag and the preferred alternative flag selected in the first referendum. The flag that receives the most votes in the second referendum will be the official flag of New Zealand.

On the voting paper, the public will be asked to tick the flag option they want to be the new flag.

Voters are being urged to get their voting paper in by Friday 11 March. Enrolled voters who do not receive their pack by then should visit election.org.nz or freephone 0800 36 76 56 to get a replacement paper.

Once completed, papers should then be placed into a New Zealand Post postbox by Monday 21 March.
