National | Waitangi Day

Waitangi festivities proceed, despite wet weather

Despite the weather and the rough sea conditions, people still gathered as one to celebrate today’s very purpose.

The sweet sound of the children singing was part of today’s entertainment at Te Tiriti o Waitangi Marae.

Streets were full as people gathered to commemorate what is the 174th anniversary since the ancestors of this area crossed the Waitangi awa before sunrise on this very day in order to partake in the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.

The treaty has enabled us all to embark on the one canoe, but it won't move ahead until we all paddle in the same direction.
