Waitangi Tribunal launches strategic direction

As historic claims under the Treaty of Waitangi draw closer to conclusion, the focus is now shifting toward thematic and contemporary grievances.

Wilson Isaac states, “As we approach the end of the district enquiries, we've got to now move into the kaupapa enquiries, claims which I said raise issues of National importance to all Māori.”

Under the new strategy, the goal is to complete historic claims by 2020.

From there the major focus will shift towards substantially advancing thematic and contemporary claims.

For example, those types of claims include that of Kōhanga Reo, WAI 262 and water rights. Today, the Tribunal announced it will commence claims regarding Māori war veterans.

According to the Tribunal, in order to achieve the goals set out in the new strategy it will require a boost in financial and human resources, a challenge put forward to the government today.

In the spirit of Matariki the Tribunal has likened its goals to the stars leading them beyond the horizon.
