Whangarei District Council wants to relocate stores selling legal highs

Relocating the stores that sell psychoactive substances is one of the proposals in a draft policy by the Whangarei District Council.

Regulations for the sale of these substances are yet to be released and in recent weeks, a young lady collapsed in the downtown mall after using them.

Now the council is calling for public submissions in Whangarei.

The Whangarei District Council are lobbying for a policy where they can move all shops that sell psychoactive substances to one area of the city and reduce the hours of sale.

Solomon Tipene from the council says, "Some began using the legal highs but grew tired of them, and have reverted back to using naturally grown material."

Public submissions open for the draft policy in March.
