It's been 17 years since Northland last hosted the Ngā Manu Kōrero National Secondary School Speech Competition. Today Whangarei welcomed schools from across the country for this meeting of national significance.
The building erupted with sound to welcome schools from across the nation bringing with them the treasured taonga of Ngā Manu Kōrero.
Radio Broadcaster Peter Lucas says, “This event will be live-streamed and broadcast on Māori radio stations across the country so that our communities can see and hear and be a part of it.”
It was mentioned that mana Māori motuhake is present in this gathering today.
“It's joyful and heart-warming to see this generation maintaining the traditions of their elders. And it’s through initiatives like this that we shall see our future leaders for our marae and our communities.”
Te Hiku Media have the task of broadcasting this event starting from tomorrow with Pei Te Hurinui and Korimako sections.
“Its technology that's not yet fully developed but we at Te Hiku Media are up for the challenge of live streaming this event to assist in the maintenance of our native tongue.”
