What do the Election results mean for Māori?

Despite poll predictions saying it would be a tight election, last night's results presented some shocks throughout the political scene.

The National Party has taken the win again and quite possibly they could govern without the help of any other party, but John Key has already said he will be in talks with the Māori Party.

It wasn't all doom and gloom for the Labour Party though, winning six of the seven Māori electorates, but that meant big losses for the Māori Party and MANA leader, Hone Harawira.

The expectation now is for the Māori Caucus to be given more influence within Labour.

According to Nanaia Mahuta, “We now need to bring our Māori Caucus together and think about where to from here.”

Having lost two of its seats, the Māori Party will be hoping the votes hold enabling Marama Fox in off the list.

In the end it seems the same parties will be at the govt table.  The question that remains now though is, who will benefit from the spread?
