Women's Sevens Series attracts 60 of the country’s top athletes

The Rugby World Cup wasn't the only rugby competition held this weekend. 60 of the best Sevens players in the country battled it out this weekend in the second annual Women's Sevens Series.

The second annual Women's Sevens Series kicked off in Taupo last Friday, attracting more than 60 of the top women’s Sevens players throughout the country.

All the competitors were divided into five teams, Kauri, Pōhutukawa, Kōwhai, Mānuka and Tī Kouka. Each team played at least two matches a day.

The top NZ players weren’t the only players there this weekend, they were joined by the Samoa's Women’s team.

The tournament is timely for the Samoan side because these ladies are currently preparing for the Oceania Sevens tournament. The qualifying team will go through to compete at the Olympics in Rio.

This series will take place over two weekends. The second part of the tournament will be held in Auckland’s Trust arena in two weeks’ time.
