Eight of the world's finest watermen touched down in NZ to compete in a home-grown, world-first event called The Ultimate Waterman.
One of the competitors in the event is world-class surfer Daniel Kereopa, who is waiting on the perfect storm.
According to Mr Kereopa, “I think the exciting thing about Cyclone Pam and what it's done for us surfers it's given us options. So there's no surfing today but we're really looking forward to see whether there's 8m swells.”
Piha locals got the opportunity to experience the spectacle, along with a group of tandem surfers from Hawai'i who were invited to showcase their sport.
The competition will continue in Coromandel and will then travel over to the South Island, tracking down Cyclone Pam.
