At the Waikato-Bays Under 18 Tennis Champs held in Hamilton, former under 16 National champion Zachary Whaanga is after the overall  title as he aims for a spot in the finals this Saturday.

Te Kāea caught up with the Kahungungu lad to see how he rates his chances and his plans for the future.

For years, Zac Whaanga has been dominating at tennis competitions but in NZ and overseas.

"I'm quite competitive, I don't like losing," Whaanga explains.

This week he's wanting to take the overall title at the Waikato-Bays Under 18 Tennis Championships.

The Ngāti Kahungungu player is based in Wellington and travelled up to Hamilton with his coach.  He says without the help of his parents he wouldn't be where he is today.

He says, "My parents have put in heaps of money and time, I live an hour away from training and they take their time out of their day for my tennis."

Zach has travelled the world playing tennis.  He says there's loads of benefits that come from playing new players overseas.

It showed this week in his second match of the competition, easily winning in under an hour.

The finals are held this Saturday.
